Foreword by Sen. Gary Hart, Co-Chair, Commission on National SecurityPreface by Thomas C. Schelling, Nobel LaureateIntroduction by Gov. James Gilmore, Chair, Advisory Panel on Weapons of Mass DestructionJenkins shows us how we must confront our fears with thoughtful and diligent action. We can afford to do no less. A must read.-GEORGE TENET, Former Director of the CIABrian Michael Jenkins is one of the world''s most renowned experts on terrorism. With an instructive, provocative book that reads like a novel, Jenkins combines cool analysis with common sense to describe the threat of nuclear terrorism. He also shows that we must guard against nuclear terror - corrosive fear that prevents sensible action and weakens our democracy. Jenkins makes a powerful case that we must take strong steps against both to make each less likely.-SAM NUNN, Co-Chairman and CEO of the Nuclear Threat InitiativeA clear-eyed and elegantly written analysis that builds to a gripping finale that thrusts the reader into the Oval Office at a moment when no one would envy the president. Jenkins''s book is at once informative, entertaining, disturbing, yet reassuring.-LT. GEN. BRENT SCOWCROFT USAF (Ret.), Former National Security Advisor to Presidents George H.W. Bush and Gerald FordDeep knowledge about terrorists combined with common sense about nuclear weapons equals a book that is sobering and educational. Help yourself and learn!-GEORGE P. SHULTZ, Former Secretary of State Distinguished Fellow, Hoover Institution, Stanford UniversityAccording to a British intelligence report leaked to the press in 2007, al Qaeda operatives are planning a large-scale attack on par with Hiroshima and Nagasaki. How likely is it that terrorists will develop the capability of such an attack? No one understands the nature of the threat posed by nuclear terrorism better than Brian Michael Jenkins - one of the world''s most renowned experts on terrorism. For more than thirty years, he has been advising the military, government, and prestigious think tanks on the dangers of escalating terrorism.Jenkins goes beyond what the experts know about terrorists'' efforts to acquire nuclear weapons, nuclear black markets, suitcase bombs, and mysterious substances like red mercury to examine how terrorists themselves think about such weapons. He offers many insights into such vital questions as:?Do terrorists see nuclear weapons as instruments of coercion or of pure destruction? Are those we label religious fanatics constrained by political and strategic calculations? If a nuclear attack took place on American soil, what life-and-death decisions would the president be forced to make? He puts the reader in the position of the president to convey the immediacy of making decisions - and the perilous repercussions of each critical decision.Jenkins notes that terrorists have become increasingly adept at creating an atmosphere of nuclear terror. In fact, al Qaeda may have succeeded in becoming the world''s first terrorist nuclear power without possessing a single nuclear weapon. The psychological effects of nuclear terror are fueled by American culture, which churns out novels and movies in which every conceivable horror scenario is played out. Political factions on both the right and the left also view nuclear terrorism as fodder to support their own arguments. In such an atmosphere, it is difficult for the average citizen to separate real from imagined dangers.Jenkins''s informed and seasoned analysis will give all Americans a levelheaded understanding of the real situation and teach us how not to yield to nuclear terror.Brian Michael Jenkins (Los Angeles, CA), one of the world''s leading authorities on terrorism, is a senior advisor to the president of the RAND Corporation, director of the National Transportation Security Center of the Mineta Transportation Institute, and a member of the board of Commercial Crime Services of the International Chamber of Commerce. He is frequently quoted in the media,

Semiconductor nanostructures such as nanowires are promising building blocks of future nanoelectronic, nanophotonic and nanosensing devices. Their physical properties are primarily determined by the epitaxy process which is rather different from the conventional thin film growth. This book shows how the advanced nucleation theory can be used in modeling of growth properties, morphology and crystal phase of such nanostructures. The book represents a systematic account of modern nucleation theory in open systems, nanostructure nucleation and growth mechanisms, and possibilities for tuning the nanostructure properties to the desired values.

Download free ebook of Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-Ray Microanalysis, and Analytical Electron Microscopy in PDF format or read online by Charles E. Lyman 9780306435911 Published on 1990-08-31 by Springer Science & Business Media

During the last four decades remarkable developments have taken place in instrumentation and techniques for characterizing the microstructure and microcomposition of materials. Some of the most important of these instruments involve the use of electron beams because of the wealth of information that can be obtained from the interaction of electron beams with matter. The principal instruments include the scanning electron microscope, electron probe x-ray microanalyzer, and the analytical transmission electron microscope. The training of students to use these instruments and to apply the new techniques that are possible with them is an important function, which. has been carried out by formal classes in universities and colleges and by special summer courses such as the ones offered for the past 19 years at Lehigh University. Laboratory work, which should be an integral part of such courses, is often hindered by the lack of a suitable laboratory workbook. While laboratory workbooks for transmission electron microscopy have-been in existence for many years, the broad range of topics that must be dealt with in scanning electron microscopy and microanalysis has made it difficult for instructors to devise meaningful experiments. The present workbook provides a series of fundamental experiments to aid in |hands-on| learning of the use of the instrumentation and the techniques. It is written by a group of eminently qualified scientists and educators. The importance of hands-on learning cannot be overemphasized.

Nuclear Multilateralism and Iran PDF Download. Download free ebook of Nuclear Multilateralism and Iran in PDF format or read online by Tarja Cronberg 9781351980654 Published on 2017-02-10 by Taylor & Francis

Drawing on the author’s personal experience, this book presents an insider’s chronology and policy analysis of the EU’s role in the nuclear negotiations with Iran. The European Union strives to be a global player, a “soft power” leader that can influence international politics and state behavior. Yet critics argue that the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) remains largely ineffective and incoherent. The EU’s early and continuous involvement in the effort to dissuade Iran from developing nuclear weapons can be viewed as a test case for the EU as a global actor. As Chair of the European Parliament’s delegation for relations with Iran, Tarja Cronberg had a ringside seat in the negotiations to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Drawing on her experiences leading a parliamentary delegation to Iran and interviews with officials, legislators and opposition leaders in nearly every country participating in the negotiations, as well as reports by the International Atomic Energy Agency, parliaments and independent experts, the author illustrates an insider’s strategic understanding of the negotiations. Intersecting history, politics, economics, culture and the broader security context, this book not only delivers a unique analysis of this historic deal and the twelve-year multilateral pursuit of it, but draws from it pertinent lessons for European policy makers for the future. This book will be of much interest to students of nuclear proliferation, EU policy, diplomacy and international relations in general.

With growing concerns over environmental issues and global energy consumption, there is increasing interest in nuclear power generation, despite its diminished role in the West over the last few decades. Many of those involved with nuclear power and environmental agencies see controlled expansion of nuclear plants as the most environmentally friendly way of meeting growing energy demands. Nuclear Renaissance: Technologies and Policies for the Future of Nuclear Power examines the future of nuclear power in the contexts of economics, environmental sustainability, and security of electricity supplies. A range of future technologies is considered, illustrating the technical challenges and opportunities facing nuclear power. This semi-technical overview of modern technologies meets the growing interest from scientists, environmentalists, and governments in the potential expansion of nuclear power. Various countries are starting to announce plans for new nuclear plants, either to replace those being decommissioned or to provide additional power. Many commentators regard this renaissance as just beginning. Nuclear Renaissance: Technologies and Policies for the Future of Nuclear Power is essential reading for physicists, engineers, policy-makers, researchers, energy analysts and graduate students in energy sciences, engineering and public policy.

Quantitative Fluorescence Microscopy PDF Download. Download free ebook of Quantitative Fluorescence Microscopy in PDF format or read online by F. W. D. Rost 9780521394222 Published on 1991-07-26 by Cambridge University Press

Quantitative fluorescence microscopy is concerned with making measurements from fluorescent specimens in a fluorescence microscope, by measuring fluorescence emission from a defined area or areas of a specimen. This technique is most commonly used to determine the amount of some specific substance, such as DNA, in some particular area of a cell. But it has many other uses; for example, it can be used to identify certain substances in the cell by examining their fluorescence characteristics. This book is a complete guide to this technique for all biologists. It describes the principles and applications of quantitative fluorescence microscopy and also gives much practical information about the instrumentation required. There is also a discussion of the exciting developments in confocal fluorescence microscopy which allows the three dimensional distribution of particular substances to be determined. Everyone presently using this technique, or wishing to start using it will need to read this book.

This novel book is the first comprehensive text on dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT), which has emerged over the past two decades as one of the most powerful new developments in many-body physics. Written by one of the key researchers in the field, the volume develops the formalism of many-body Green's functions using the equation of motion approach, which requires an undergraduate solid state physics course and a graduate quantum mechanics course as prerequisites. The DMFT is applied to study transport in multilayered nanostructures, which is likely to be one of the most prominent applications of nanotechnology in the coming years. The text is modern in scope focusing on exact numerical methods rather than the perturbation theory. Formalism is developed first for the bulk and then for the inhomogeneous multilayered systems. The science behind the metal-insulator transition, electronic charge reconstruction, and superconductivity are thoroughly described. The book covers complete derivations and emphasizes how to carry out numerical calculations, including discussions of parallel programing algorithms. Detailed descriptions of the crossover from tunneling to thermally activated transport, of the properties of Josephson junctions with barriers tuned near the metal-insulator transition, and of thermoelectric coolers and power generators are provided as applications of the theory. The combination of atomic force microscopy with ultrasonic methods allows the nearfield detection of acoustic signals. The nondestructive characterization and nanoscale quantitative mapping of surface adhesion and stiffness or friction is possible. The aim of this book is to provide a comprehensive review of different scanning probe acoustic techniques, including AFAM, UAFM, SNFUH, UFM, SMM and torsional tapping modes. Basic theoretical explanations are given to understand not only the probe dynamics but also the dynamics of tip surface contacts. Calibration and enhancement are discussed to better define the performance of the techniques, which are also compared with other classical techniques such as nanoindentation or surface acoustic wave. Different application fields are described, including biological surfaces, polymers and thin films.

Downwind PDF Download. Download free ebook of Downwind in PDF format or read online by Sarah Alisabeth Fox 9780803269507 Published on 2014-11-01 by U of Nebraska Press

Downwind is an unflinching tale of the atomic West that reveals the intentional disregard for human and animal life through nuclear testing by the federal government and uranium extraction by mining corporations during and after the Cold War. Sarah Alisabeth Fox highlights the personal cost of nuclear testing and uranium extraction in the American West through extensive interviews with “downwinders,” the Native American and non-Native residents of the Great Basin region affected by nuclear environmental contamination and nuclear-testing fallout. These downwinders tell tales of communities ravaged by cancer epidemics, farmers and ranchers economically ruined by massive crop and animal deaths, and Native miners working in dangerous conditions without proper safety equipment so that the government could surreptitiously study the effects of radiation on humans. In chilling detail Downwind brings to light the stories and concerns of these groups whose voices have been silenced and marginalized for decades in the name of “patriotism” and “national security.” With the renewed boom in mining in the American West, Fox’s look at this hidden history, unearthed from years of field interviews, archival research, and epidemiological studies, is a must-read for every American concerned about the fate of our western lands and communities.
