One-dimensional (ID) nanostructures have attracted considerable interests in the last two decades because of their exceptional physical, chemical, and electrical properties, as well as potential applications in materials reinforcement, sensors, and nanoelectronics. Many ID nanostructures have been synthesized, such as nanotubes, nanowires, nanobelts, and nanorods. It is important to understand the mechanical characteristics of these nanostructures prior to their future applications.Nanoindentation is now commonly used to characterize mechanical properties of materials in the nanometer scale. A series of experiments on different types of substrates were conducted to understand the nanoindenter and its software, and also to study some limitations of machine and its influential effects. Indentations less than 20 nanometers in depth were performed on boron platelets to measure their Young's moduli.Alternative mechanical characterization methods, such as tensile and resonance vibration testing, can also be used to provide a measure of mechanical properties of 1D nanostructures. A nanomanipulator is necessary if these mechanical testing methods are to be carried out. A home-built nanomanipulator was developed inside a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The performance of nanomanipulator system and its basic functions were studied.
